Overcoming Adversity: The Inspiring Story of Zalimba

In the realm of education, every student's journey is unique, but few stories encapsulate resilience and determination quite like that of Zalimba, a Form 4 student and beneficiary of Story Time. Zalimba's narrative is a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the transformative power of support and advocacy.

A Tragic Turn

Zalimba's life took a devastating turn in October 2018 when he suffered a severe head injury, leaving him partially paralyzed. The incident occurred as he accompanied his mother to her hometown to resolve a land dispute. Tragically, an altercation ensued, resulting in Zalimba being struck on the head with a panga knife. The repercussions were profound, rendering him unable to speak, walk, or perform basic tasks independently.

A Journey of Resilience

Despite the immense challenges he faced, Zalimba's spirit remained unbroken. His recovery required intensive physiotherapy and a daunting relearning process - teaching himself to write with his left hand after being right-handed most of his life. Through intensive physiotherapy and unwavering determination, he made remarkable strides in his recovery. From being confined to a wheelchair to regaining the ability to walk with difficulty, Zalimba's progress is a testament to his unwavering resolve.

The Importance of Support

Zalimba's journey is not one of solitary perseverance but rather a testament to the support and solidarity of his community. Friends like Pemphero and Emmanuel have stepped up to assist him with meals, hygiene, and daily tasks, demonstrating the power of compassion and camaraderie. His brother was able to transport him to school via bike, but can no longer assist him. Zalimba now walks the 5-miles to school every day. His parents support him however they can, but as small farmers, his family's extreme poverty has made meeting even basic needs extraordinarily difficult.

Story Time's goal is to ease some of these difficulties by providing basic needs like soap and money for food like maize. Story Time views Secondary School as a necessity to help Zalimba sustain himself and build his future, and through the Student Sponsorship Program, providing school fees and exam fees, and advocacy with Story Time staff has provided crucial support, advocating for Zalimba's special needs and ensuring access to education despite his challenges.

Looking Ahead

As Zalimba navigates the challenges of his academic journey, there is a collective determination to ensure his success.

Advocacy efforts are underway to secure special accommodations for him during examinations, recognizing his unique circumstances. Self-boarding accommodation, facilitated by Story Time, will allow Zalimba to stay much closer to the school, and provide basic necessities like staple food, water and soap. These efforts aim to alleviate some of the practical challenges he faces, so he can focus on completing his secondary education.
